One pic only on web page

How can I have just one picture on my website, instead of the 15 that I now have?
I'd prefer to have a few images, to keep the page neat and clean, to link to the full gallery.
That way, I can have, say, four different categories of photo's on my page, with four pictures...

Visitors would then click on the category 'Nature', for example, and up pops the gallery with the relevant images.

I hope my question is clear...

Enable Gallery in the Gallery tab in the Editor. Click the Advanced button under Behaviour, then choose First thumb only under Visible thumbnails.
